Stories of the Qur'an
The Prophet Musa and the sea
The story of the Prophet Musa (Moses), Pharaoh and the parting of the sea, told from the Qur'an.
A baby on the Nile
Pharaoh was killing the sons of the Children of Israel. Allah inspired Musa's mother to place him in a chest on the Nile, promising to return him to her (28:7-13).
In Pharaoh's palace
The chest reached Pharaoh's palace. Musa grew up there and was given back to his own mother to nurse, and Allah's promise was fulfilled.
At Mount Tur
After years in Madyan, Allah spoke to him at Mount Tur and sent him with his brother Harun to Pharaoh: "Speak to him gently" (20:9-44).
The staff and the magicians
Pharaoh gathered his magicians. When Musa threw his staff, it swallowed what they had made. The magicians recognised a miracle and believed (20:65-73).
The parting of the sea
Musa left by night with the Children of Israel and Pharaoh pursued them with his army. The sea lay ahead. Musa said, "No! My Lord is with me; He will guide me." He struck the sea with his staff, it parted and they were saved, while Pharaoh drowned (26:52-66).
Lessons
However mighty the oppressor seems, the outcome belongs to Allah. Reliance on Him in a moment that looks hopeless is the door to rescue. Gentle speech is the way of calling.
