Qurbani (Udhiyah) on Eid al-Adha
On Eid al-Adha Muslims sacrifice an animal in memory of the Prophet Ibrahim's readiness to sacrifice his son, whom Allah ransomed with a ram (37:107).
Who should offer it
It is wajib in the Hanafi school for an adult Muslim who owns wealth at the nisab, and a confirmed sunnah in the other schools.
Animals
- A sheep or goat: one share (at least one year old; a sheep of six months that looks one year old is accepted).
- A cow or buffalo: up to seven shares (two years).
- A camel: up to seven shares (five years).
- The animal should be healthy and free of clear defects.
When
After the Eid prayer on the 10th of Dhul Hijjah until sunset on the 12th (13th in the Shafi'i school). In 2027, Eid al-Adha is expected on May 16.
Sharing the meat
It is recommended to divide it in three: one third for your family, one for relatives and friends, and one for the poor. Many Muslims in the West pay a charity to sacrifice on their behalf abroad.
Questions
Should I cut my hair and nails before Qurbani?
